No Shifting Shadows

Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change (James 1:16-17).

Sometimes God allows hard times to grow us. When times are hard, we need to know that God really loves us, and that he can be trusted.

One of the greatest things about God is that he is immutable. That is a big, fancy bible word that means God never changes. His love for us will not change. His hatred of evil will not change. And his ability to control all things for our good will not change.

Wouldn’t it be hard to trust God if he was changing his mind all the time? You would never
know what to expect from him. Thankfully, God is not like that.

At the end of verse 17 it says, “...coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no
variation or shadow due to change.” James is saying that we can trust who God says he is.

Read Psalm 102:25-27
• What do these verses have to do with our text from the book of James?
• Have you ever felt that maybe God has changed his mind about you?
• Why is God’s immutability a comfort for us?

Prayer
Our Father, thank you that we can trust you because your character never changes. We know your love for us will never change. Help us to believe when our circumstances tempt us to doubt these truths. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
