Keep It Fresh!

So, your kid is going to high school; they are going to be the little fish in the big pond. Here’s a resource to help encourage and support your son or daughter to keep it F.R.E.S.H! This is a pep talk Pastor Ryan gave to his kids when they were going into their freshman year of high school and was asked to share with other parents. The outline is designed for parents to have a discussion with their son or daughter before or during their freshman year. We encourage parents to set aside some one-on-one time with their child and maybe take them out on a special date to discuss these matters and keep them encouraged throughout their freshman year to keep it F.R.E.S.H, and let them know that you are praying for them and cheering for them!

Faith. High school is a great opportunity to grow in your faith. You will have to determine if your faith is your faith or your parents’ faith. God wants you to grow in your faith and your dependence on him. Start working on developing a rhythm of personal devotionals.

Relationships. You will have to learn to navigate new and old relationships. It’s important to be open to new relationships and seek to build these with other Christian guys and girls. God wants to grow you through relationships.

Engage. You go to school to learn engage in classroom discussions; sit in the front row if you can. Engage in sports, clubs, and other extracurricular activities.

Study. Study is the work of the student. You don’t need a job; you already have one. Study and take tests. Study alone. Study with friends. Study with parents. Study with a pet. Study every day.

Humor. Lots of students overstress and freak out. Remember to have fun and enjoy this season of your life. Learn to laugh at yourself and have a sense of humor.

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.
