The Passage

John 16:12-15, ESV

  1. We need help from the Holy Spirit. (vs. 12-13)
  2. The Holy Spirit guides believers into God’s Word. (vs.12-13)
  3. The Holy Spirit reveals things about the future. (vs.13)
  4. The Holy Spirit brings glory to Jesus. (vs.14-15)

Talk It Over

Ice Breaker -  "Two Truths and a Lie" Each person takes turns sharing three statements about themselves - two of which are true, and one is a lie. The rest of the group then has to guess which statement is the lie. This activity not only serves as a lighthearted way to get to know each other better but can also create a relaxed atmosphere before diving into the more in-depth discussion. It's a great way to break the ice and have some fun!

  1. Can you share a personal experience where you felt the Holy Spirit guiding you? Especially in prayer or in a situation where you needed guidance?
  2. What specific insights or challenges from the sermon stood out to you?
  3. Take a minute to read the passage.  John 16:12-15.
  4. According to the scripture, what does the Holy Spirit help do?
  5. In what ways does the Holy Spirit continue to guide us through the Scriptures today?
  6. Discuss the concept of prophecy mentioned in the sermon. How does the Holy Spirit's guidance extend to revealing things about the future? How can an understanding of eschatology (theology of last things) impact our perspective on the future?
  7. How can we actively seek the help of the Holy Spirit in our daily lives, especially in understanding and applying God's Word?
  8.  In what ways can we be more intentional in praying for others, as illustrated in Pastor Ryan’s story of John at the river?
  9. Share instances where you've seen God's timing and guidance in your life.
  10. Discuss the idea of being a witness for Jesus. How comfortable are you in sharing your faith with others?
  11. How can the Holy Spirit's work in glorifying Jesus inspire and empower us to be effective witnesses in our communities?
  12. How can we collectively apply the teachings from scripture in our daily lives and as a small group?

Note to leader

*Remember to encourage open and honest sharing within the group, allowing everyone to contribute their thoughts and experiences.
