DIRECTION - Part 1

Worship Him Alone - April 7th, 2013 - Pastor Ryan Rice

GOD DIRECTS US TO WORSHIP HIM ALONE

  • Worship is to show value and worth to someone or something

"And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

“You shall have no other gods before me.” Exodus 20:3

"If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth." Colossians 3:1-2

"Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry." Colossians 3:5

  • Idols can be anything that we set our hearts on, or hopes in or above Jesus Christ

THE ABC’S OF WORSHIPING HIM ALONE

  • Acknowledge idols of the Heart

"Little children, keep yourselves from idols." 1 John 5:21

  • Success

  • Power

  • Image

  • Relationships

  • Pleasures

The Spirit:

"Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!" Psalm 139:23-24

The Word:

"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." Hebrews 4:12

The church family:

“The purposes of a man’s heart are deep waters, but a man of understanding draws them out.” Proverbs 20:5

“Better is open rebuke than hidden love.” Proverbs 27:5

“Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates correction is stupid.” Proverbs 12:1

  • BATTLE THE HEART

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?" Jeremiah 17:9

“The human heart is a factory of idols, every one of us is, from his mother’s womb, an expert in inventing idols.” - John Calvin

  • COME TO CHRIST IN YOUR TIME OF NEED

"Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need." Hebrews 4:16

• In your greatest times of need turn to Christ, not your idol
