Topic: Romans Scripture: Romans 7:7–7:25

INTRODUCTION

“For a person is never in so good estate as to when their whole life is a journey towards
the unchangeable life and their whole affections are fixed upon God” - St Augustine

• In this life there are UPS AND DOWNS in the journey of life
• We must KNOW HOW to NAVIGATE in the journey of life

5 ESSENTIALS FOR THE JOURNEY

#1 LOOK TO GOD’S LAW TO SHOW YOU THE WAY
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105)
For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light, and the reproofs of discipline are the
way of life, (Proverbs 6:23)
[12] So the law is holy, and the commandment is holy and righteous and good.

4 Reformational Perspectives of the Law
1. Reveals our need for a savior
2. Restrains sin in our world
3. Reveals God’s character
4. Reveals what pleases God

#2 COUNT ON STRUGGLING WITH SIN
If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. (1 John 1:8a)
[15] For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the
very thing I hate.

“Real Christianity so impacts the affections that it shapes ones fears, hopes, loves
hatreds, desires, joys, sorrows, gratitude’s, compassion and zeal’s” - Jonathan Edwards

[19] For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.
[21] So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand.

2 Kinds of Sin
• Internal
• External

How to deal with sin:
• Confession
• Contrition
• Change

#3 SLOW DOWN TO DELIGHT IN GOD

Delight yourself in the LORD... (Psalm 37:4)
[22] For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being

#4 BE AWARE OF YOUR WEAKNESSES

“Although Christians are free from the condemnation of the law, sin nonetheless
continues to dwell within, and all genuine Christians (along with Paul) should be
profoundly aware of how far they fall short of God’s absolute standard of
righteousness.” - ESV Commentator

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in
weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the
power of Christ may rest upon me. - 2 Corinthians 12:9

[24] Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?”[25] Thanks
be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with
my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
