The Religious Need The Gospel
Pt 5- Romans 2:1-16

3 WAYS TO LIVE...
1. Irreligion: I Live as I please. (Last weeks message)
2. Gospel: I am accepted therefore I obey.
3. Religion: I obey, there I am accepted. (This week and next weeks)

“Gospel-Centered Living is about living from acceptance, not working for it. We live as we ought, in light of the cross, in light of God’s Grace we joyfully obey him, love him and live for him, with all that we have and are. We are not licentious nor legalists, we don’t live however we please, we live by grace, and from grace, which all is from God’s Gospel of Jesus. This is gospel-centered living.”

“Religion as I am describing it, is mans attempt to get God’s approval and recognition through moral obedience. Therefore, sins of religious often become internal vs. external, yet God is no fool and sees right through the human heart. Sin is sin. We all need Jesus.”

“Sin is any failure to conform to God’s truths: in action, attitude, or in our human nature.”

..for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
(Romans 3:23 ESV)

FOUR SIGNS OF A RELIGIOUS SPIRIT (1-5)

#1 Judgmental Attitude (1-2)
There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor? (James 4:12 ESV)

#2 Hypocritical Lifestyle (3)
They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips. (Romans 1:29 ESV)

#3 Entitlement Problem (4)
Reasoning
Efforts
Ethnicity
Education
Economics

#4 Failure to Repent (5)

“To repent means to, ally with God against your sinful desires.”- A.W. Pink

The 3 C’s of Repentance: Confession, Contrition and Change

REMEMBER GOD IS A GOOD JUDGE (6-11)

"The focus of this passage is on the fact that God will judge all peoples, not on the details..." John A. Witmer

God is Good because...
He is true and right (2)
He rewards good (7,10)
He punishes evil (8)
He doesn’t play favorites (11)

LIVING WITH JESUS AS THE JUDGE...(12-16 )

1) Let’s Stand United in Need with all People (12)

2) Let’s Continue to Practice what is Preached (13)

But be doers of the word, and not hearers only.... (James 1:22 ESV)

"God does not give eternal life or justification to those who perform good works, but to those who believe (trust) in Him and whose conduct reveals their regenerate hearts." - John A. Witmer

3) Let’s Invite the Spirit to Guide your Conscience, the Cross to Clean it and the Scripture to Screen it. (14-15)

"Conscience is an important part of human nature, but it is not an absolutely trustworthy indicator of what is right." - Witmer

So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man.
(Acts 24:16 ESV)

How much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
(Hebrews 9:14 ESV)

“I cannot and will not recant anything, for to go against conscience is neither right nor safe. Here I stand, I can do no other, so help me God. Amen.” - Martin Luther
