You cannot serve God and money - Mt 6:24

In the NT the word occurs only on the lips of Jesus. It denotes “earthly goods,”...When people trust in it or give their hearts to it they cannot love God. Believers, then, must break out of enslavement to it and learn to depend on God - Kittel, G.

#1 Jesus Said, “Don’t Lay up Treasures on Earth”

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal,

#2 Jesus Said, “Lay up Treasures in Heaven”

but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.

God’s word says he rewards in heaven (4,6,18)Our treasure is our savior not our stuff (21, other scripture later)

Christ designs not to deprive us of our treasure, but to direct us in the choice of it; - Matthew Henry Puritan

#1 Give to the Needy: Sell your possessions, and give to the needy. Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. (Luke 12:33-34 ESV)

#2 Give to the Poor: Jesus said to him, “If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. (Matthew 19:21-22, cf. Mark 10:21-22, Luke 18:22 ESV)

#3 Be Generous and Share: As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life. (1 Timothy 6:17-19 ESV)

“Possessions on earth are not for accumulating, they are for distributing” - Piper

This sense seems to agree with the context; we must lay up treasure in heaven by liberality in giving... - Matthew Henry
